Molly Browns is a family-run boutique fashion retailer based in Yorkshire, with multiple stores in the region, they supply a wide range of ladies’ clothing from acclaimed designers such as Joseph Ribkoff, Frank Lyman, Kevan Jon, Naya, Dolcezza, Marble, and Aggido.

The company offers a personalised shopping experience, catering to women seeking attire for special events such as weddings and proms; a growing company that has established boutiques in the market towns of Beverly and Brigg, alongside their flagship store based in York. They aim to cater for all women across the Yorkshire area and the north of England.

Molly Browns prides itself on delivering a traditional customer service experience. In-store, they offer expert personal shopping services and exceptional after-sales support to ensure every customer’s needs are met. As the next step in their growth, they aimed to establish an online e-commerce platform that would reflect these same core values in a digital environment. The following case study outlines how Sculpt Digital developed a web platform that successfully brought Molly Browns’ renowned customer service into the online space.

Our process

The Task

Sculpt Digital was commissioned to design and build a brand new website, the goal was to create a user-friendly e-commerce platform that would guide customers seamlessly from product discovery through to checkout.

Just as importantly, the website needed to reflect Molly Browns’ traditional values by incorporating elements of their personalised customer service into their online experience.

The Design

Molly Browns’ website was in need of a serious refresh; their large product range and strong product imagery was the core of our redesign and gave inspiration to a light and elegant approach.

We decided on two complimentary font styles to reflect the quality of the brand and the product range available:

  • Playfair Display
    A clean modern serif, with slightly condensed tracking and width.
    Used in headings in a large size and regular weight, this font’s thin cross strokes create a striking balance of legibility and identity.
  • Karla
    A grotesk font with a double-story g this font is a great accent to our heading font.
    Used throughout the site in a regular or light weight for paragraphs and copy and in a heavier weight for buttons.

To continue the uncomplicated style the chosen colour palette was kept to a minimum with subtle hues of brown and grey to accentuate the colourful and bold imagery of the boutique designer clothing.

The Build

To bring Molly Browns’ traditional customer service values into the digital space, Sculpt Digital designed and developed a fully bespoke e-commerce website using WordPress and WooCommerce. The site was built to be fully responsive, ensuring an optimal browsing experience across desktops, tablets, and mobile devices.

At the heart of the build was a dynamic block-based structure powered by Advanced Custom Fields (ACF). This modular approach empowered Molly Browns’ team to easily manage and update site content without needing technical knowledge; from homepage banners and promotional sections to product features and landing pages, each component was built with flexibility in mind, allowing for full control over site presentation and messaging.

The website was designed with a strong focus on user experience (UX). A clean and elegant interface reflected the sophistication of the Molly Browns brand, while intuitive navigation elements—such as a slide-out side menu and real-time search functionality that allowed users to browse collections effortlessly. Key features included streamlined category filtering and product sorting options.

Custom indexing and ajax approach

Over the years we’ve developed our own bespoke search platform/plugin for WordPress and this works especially well with eCommerce sites, allowing us to create a custom index of attributes / terms / categories for a rapid response.

We tailored this further with an instant search accessible from the site header, with options for popular and recent searches.

Stock Management

Multi-store stock levels

Molly Browns have multiple stores and stock is distributed across the stores. We had to create custom fields and functionality to manage the store stock levels and consolidate this data into WooCommerce’s stock standards.

In addition we created customised admin screens to allow easy management of stock levels across product ranges and stores, allowing for painless handling of a complex stock management solution.
